Brand New Dr….. Who?
Dr. Who fans lamented when they heard the current Dr. Who wouldn’t be returning as the good doctor. It’s been a long wait but we’ve finally found out who the new Dr. Who is going to be. It’s deffinetly a “wait, who??” moment. A British born actor by the name of Matt Smith, who’s relatively unknown in the United States, has been announced as the new, and youngest, Dr. Who. Born in 1982, he beats out Dave Tennant by eleven years.

Software Issue With 30GB Zune Confirmed
An article up on neowin.net has confirmed for the public that the 30GB Zune MP3 player has a major software glitch, stemming from a recent software update and the new year. Many are calling this the “Z2K” bug, jokingly, althought it partially fits the problem. According to Microsoft, they’re working on a fix for the software issue and should have it out as soon as it’s tested and confirmed. Apple has released that they shouldn’t have any issues with the coming new year and their MP3 players. You can read the full story Here.
A Little Help with Time Machine, from The Stealth Mac
Here’s a fantastic help video from The Stealth Mac, one of our newer, very popular affiliates, on how to help yourself out in case your Time Machine feature isn’t running like it should. Have a listen!
You can listen and watch more Stealth Mac goodness over at thestealthmac.com!
FCC Chairman Alright with Porn
Just heard this over on Truemors, hopefully it’s the true part and not the rumor part. Apparently the FCC’s chairman, which is working on some form of free broadband, removed the requirement for a porn filter on the software. We’ll have more on this one as it developes.
Minigun in Left4Dead now Usable as Catapult
Don’t ask me how the hell the person that originally found this out thought it up, but it’s brilliant. Essentially you need to thwack at a minigun anywhere in Left4Dead, the more you hit the farther you go. Whenever you want to launch yourself, just hop on and go for a ride! Here’s a little video detailing this fun new trick.
Could the Wii be going to War?
Could the Wii see a major place in the battlefield of the future? The United States Army thinks so with this recent development in robotics technology. Here’s the report CNN put together on what could become of this gaming gone wartime tool.
As with any new technology, and with anyone who’s used the Wiimotes, they aren’t exact but they get the job done for gamers. The question that CNN raises is will they be accurate enough for the US Army to use with bomb detonating robots? A prototype should be ready in a year, and active service of the combat Wii-mote could be as early as three years from now.
Merry Christmas and Happy Winter
Here at TGM, we’re nearing our year and a half mark this Christmas morning, I’m not sure when it is exactly, but it can’t be more than a couple months away. We’re continuing to make great and fantastic strides in wonderfully geeky content that hopefully gives people a nice bright spot in some days that, for many, haven’t been looking all that great. Maybe it’s the financial situation, or a reason not to celebrate this holiday season, either way many of us have been hit with reasons to look a bit less cheery this year, and I sincerely hope that we’ve been able to alleviate that for all our dedicated reader and listener base.
I’d also like to take the time to thank all our affiliates that have stuck with us so far, as well as the new ones we’ve brought on board in the past few months, especially within my area that I’ve been able to meet in person, it’s an honor and privilege to continue to work with every single one of you. Without you all, as well as our fans, we wouldn’t be here doing this.
Hopefully you’re celebrating with family today, opening presents and enjoying time off, and I also hope that if you’re going through hard times, which much of America and the world is right now, that you take heart in what we can do for and with each other. In union, as a geeky community, we have the chance to look at what’s happening right now and say we have a place where we don’t have to worry about that kind of thing, that we have a bright spot in our days to look forward to, and maybe we even made someone laugh and smile thanks to what we do best. That best is geekyness at it’s finest.
In hopes you’ll keep that geekyness close to your heart, and to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy Winter, here’s Samwise from Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers film, with a great quote that sums up all we have to be thankful for this year.
“The shadow, even darkness must pass. A new day will come, And when the sun shines it’ll shine out the clearer! Those are the stories that stay with you, that meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think Mister Frodo, I do understand, I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, but they didn’t, they kept going. Because they were holdin’ on to something.” “What are we holding on to Sam?” “There’s some good in this world Mister Frodo, and it’s worth fighting for!”
Holy Crap! Rob Just Dinged!
Our illustrious leader, Robert “MacHarborGuy” Shepard, has made it another full trip around the sun once more on this day, and has dinged a ripe, old twenty-nine years old. Everyone wish him a happy birthday here, on twitter (twitter.com/macharborguy), or however you may know him best!
Interested in getting him something to celebrate Rob’s slow aging process? Don’t worry about getting him any presents (I already supplied him with Mana Potions), instead consider donating to TGM at the Chip-In button at the top right of the screen. Even a donation of two or three dollars is greatly appreciated, as we’re very thankful for every dollar we’ve received to help keep TGM going.
Rob does a lot of work around the station here, everything from head tech to manager to accountant. Happy Birthday Rob, thanks for doing the heavy lifting and allowing me to be a part of this great experiment we call The Geek Media.

Cyan Worlds Cements Place in History
Yesterday the unthinkable happened. Cyan Worlds announced, due to financial difficulties, that they wouldn’t be continuing any development on MystOnline until further resources free up. This is not what’s making news, though.
What’s making news in this recent announcement from Cyan Worlds is that they’re releasing the intellectually property for all of Myst Online, save for one hosted shard they’re holding on to. They’re also going to be hosting the entire database for MystOnline for anyone that’s interested in using the IP to make their own shards. All of this is coming to the consumer at no cost whatsoever.
It’s horrible to see a company that has such a good reputation not do well, but they made the right decision. In a world where so many companies are trying harder to protect their IP, it’s very refreshing to see a company wanting to see their project, their baby to say, evolve and grow even without them. This isn’t to say Cyan Worlds isn’t going to be there, but they won’t have their hands on it most of the time now.
We here at TGM hope for the best for Cyan Worlds, and implore you all to visit their website, right here, and support them in any way you might be able to.
