To all the ungrateful Star Trek fans

I swear, this has got to be the most fickle, annoying subgroup of fans ever that aren’t happy with the new Star Trek film without having even seen it yet.

Oh my gosh, the phasers look slightly different!

Oh no, the events of the past are in a slightly different order!

Please, it’s just a few changes because locking the new film for a whole new generation of fans into a “canon” that was built sporadically from a TV show, retrofit for novels and movies, that is hung together like spaghetti was kind of restrictive.

I’m not done yet.

All I keep hearing is stuff like “Oh, but this is Christopher Pike so the uniforms should look like they did in “The Cage”” and on and on.

The Cage was a pilot for the show! They stuffed it in to have more episode material! It was an afterthought, not some grand Roddenberry scheme based on a canon or bible. Most of the Star Trek canon is a mish mash of fans trying to make sense of the big Hollywood mess they made! The other Star Trek movies broke it all the time… “Well, Chekov never met Khan!” “No wait, Chekov was really on the ship but wasn’t promoted yet so we just didn’t see him in that episode.” Who cares? It’s a TV show, not a real history!

These hard core fans, wanting the impossible — to keep to some canon that hardly fits together anyway, that the TV series, movies and books even have to break from time to time, is ridiculous. Face it, Star Trek has DIED. Enterprise BOMBED. They are BRINGING IT BACK and trying to make it appeal to a whole new generation of fans and give it LIFE again. The hard core fans should be HAPPY that new people get to experience the Star Trek universe and that Hollywood is WILLING to make a movie after the dismal ratings for the last series and the last Star Trek movies!  It’s like a starving man turning down a free sandwich because “oh, it’s got too much mayo.”

You know what, you want to complain and moan about these things? Fine. But you have no appreciation for the fact that you are not only getting a movie, you are getting one from a director who actually CARES about the fans and the series, instead of some Hollywood rip off artist. Not only that, he is one of the BEST directors out here! You haven’t even SEEN the film and yet you are trashing it! This has got to be the most ungrateful type of fan I’ve ever seen. “I want Star Trek, but I only want it MY way.” This film is going to re-launch the Star Trek universe, and you can either get on board the NEW USS Enterprise, or you can stay in your basement holding your old-style phaser saying, “It’s just not the same.”

Battlefield Heroes closes beta, retreats until 2009

Battlefield Heroes

All of you lucky beta soldiers that were recruited to participate in the engagement of bug scouting and reporting, please report to the front office to be relieved of duty. That’s right kids, as of 6 p.m. CET, November 14, 2008, the free-to-play shooter being published by Electronics Arts and developed by Digital Illusions have shut down their closed beta to “focus on polishing up the backend,“ according to a post on the game’s official site.

We have received lots of great feedback from our beta testers. So much so that we are now ready to enter our next phase. On Friday evening (6pm CET) we will be closing down the current Closed Beta and moving our focus to polishing the backend. So for a while there will be no closed beta available to play. We expect to re-open the beta early next year.

Battlefield Heroes is a multiplayer online shooter that is planned to gain support from micro-transactions the same way a lot of free to play MMOs that you normally see offered on websites are.

The game’s look is that of the cartoonish nature popularized by Valve’s Team Fortress 2. For players outside of the closed beta, this can only be regarded as good news as the game is approaching it’s final stages before release.

A Smooth Launch, and an Exciting Expansion for World of Warcraft

By Candace Holly

Today, World of Warcraft launched their new expansion; Wrath of the Lich King. The expansion features a new hero class for players to experience. It also features new zones, instances, leveling areas, professions and the level cap has been raised to level 80. Blizzard has learned a lot from the launch of World of Warcraft, and from the shaky launch of The Burning Crusade. Wrath of the Lich King is by far the smoothest I have seen in some time.

The Burning Crusade brought us plenty of downtime, server lag, and server restarts. Not to mention the starting zone for all level 60’s was located in one place; Hellfire Peninsula. Wrath of the Lich King changed all of that. Two starting areas are available for the players – the Borean Tundra and the Howling Fjord . Players concerned about server lag, and camped questing spots will breathe a sigh of relief. The new zones being split have allowed for more room, less lag, and less camped areas.

Another smart move with the launch of Wrath of the Lich King was Blizzard adding elements of the game a month in advance. Patch 3.0 gave us some new features to World of Warcraft. Stormwind Harbor was opened which linked all the major Alliance cities. The new zepplin towers near the Undercity also showed up, giving players promised passage to Borean Tundra and Howling Fjord. Barber shops, offering players new hairstyles and better character customization were also offered in the patch.

Best Buy Black Friday 2008 Xbox 360 bundle

There are two sides to Black Friday ads. There are ones where you can instantly tell they are the real deal and then there are questionable ads which look authentic but are just a hoax.

The Best Buy 2008 Black Friday ad, which has just popped up on the internet falls into the later category.

If it is real, then there are going to be some fantastic video game deals at Best Buy stores this season. We’ve looked through the ad and created a list of what this “possible” Black Friday 2008 Best Buy’s deals are. Please note that, in a few instances, a game’s title or platform may not be accurate due to the bad quality of the ad scan.

GTA IV downloadable content, Chinatown Wars pushed to Spring 2009

Section: Gaming News, Consoles, Xbox-360, Handhelds, DS, Game-Companies, Publishers, Genres, 3D, Action, Shooter

GTA IV

MTV’s Multiplayer Blog brings us some sad news from BMO Capital Markets Conference today (November 13, 2008). Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick told the people there that GTA: Chinatown Wars would be released by the end of April 2009 and the Xbox exclusive downloadable content for GTA IV would be pushed back until Spring of 2009.

Zelnick did say the DLC portion is almost complete but extra time is needed in order to make it truly special. No specific reason was given for the sudden delay of Chinatown Wars.

As disappointing as that is, we can take solace in remembering all the huge titles that have come out over the past month or so. It was hinted earlier by Variety during an interview with Dan Houser that the release date for the DLC could be pushed back. All is well though because we’ve already have a boatload of games to play before the end of the year anyway. We can wait a few more months to tour more districts of Liberty City’s underbelly.

Lionhead teases Fable 2 announcement

Section: Gaming News, Consoles, Xbox-360, Genres, 3D, Action, Adventure, Role-Playing

fable 2 screen shot

Did you finish Fable 2 yet? Did you manage to sneak your way passed the game’s life ruining bugs and glitches? I managed to finish it twice with only one character stuck in infinite turmoil thanks to the “Abbot glitch”. But if you did manage to finish it, then a recent tease on the Lionhead blog should tickle your curiosity as it has ours:

Normally, we don’t like to tease too much. You know, all this hype being generated by teasing the announcement that there will be an announcement in X-number of days. Who cares? But in this day and age where a gazillion titles are asking for your attention, I felt it might be the right thing to do on the blog. We’ve got some G o o d [Good] news for all Fable II fans next week, dare I even say it’s quite a big announcement? Yes of course I dare say it’s a big announcement regarding Fable II, next week!

Oh Lionhead, you are such a tease despite your claim. Dammit, now we are anxious to hear what this “big announcement” is.

Could it be a large quest expansion offering up new cities and moral choices? Perhaps some enhancements to the regular game including new clothes, weapons, maybe even the ability to dress your spouse and child? Or perhaps its simply the patch we are all waiting for to free our characters from the clutches of the Abbot and his glitch and maybe free our wives from our castle’s walls. Finally, maybe its the missing limited edition content that we’ve been waiting for.

Whatever it is, we’ll take it because we are rather addicted to the game and any more it is welcome.
