California Supreme Court Agrees - “You Can’t Have ‘The Doors’ Without Morrison”
Posted By: Rob on Aug 24, 2:28 pm

Wired.com is reporting on a story that the California Supreme Court has ruled that Ray Manzarek (The Doors; keyboardist), Robby Krieger (The Doors; guitarist) and Ian Astbury (The Cult; vocalist) would not be able to call themselves “The Doors [of the 21st century]“  Quote from the article…

“You can’t call yourselves The Doors because you can’t have The Doors without Jim Morrison,” argued Densmore’s attorney S. Jerome Mandel, summing up the legal conclusion of the disagreement that has torn the already fragmented legend into further shreds.

Densmore’s rationale was simple: Jim wouldn’t have approved.

Review: Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along-Blog
Posted By: Rob on Aug 13, 2:23 pm

Joss Whedon, best known for Firefly, Serenity, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV Series), does the geek world justice with the three part series Dr Horribles Sing-Along-Blog.  Combining comedy and drama with elements of geek, internet and comic book culture wrapped up in a musical candy-coating, Dr Horrible has to be one of the best productions I have seen since HBO’s Rome.  Click the following link to read the review. Meet the Geek: Spinn from Audio Digest
Posted By: Candace on Aug 6, 9:43 pm

TGM: Let’s start with an easy intro. Tell us who you are and what you do.
Spinn: Who is your daddy and what does he do? Yeah, sorry, bad movie quotes are the WIN! Bonus points if you know where it came from! I’m Brad, aka Spinn. I’m a nurse by trade, but a DJ by heart. I’m also a serious audiophile and somewhat of a game geek, with a HUGE technology geek factor thrown in for good measure.

TGM: You’re a DJ for a sub genre of music that caters to a sub-culture.How is it actually being part of such a tight-knit group?
Spinn:That’s actually what has always been the draw of Drum & Bass, for me.All dnb heads tend to be somewhat of musical snobs, but they are otherwise a very accepting culture. It’s not about being seen, what you look like or where you come from, it’s ALL about the music. That, combined with the WIDE variety of drum and bass, make it extensively more inclusive than most other genres of electronic music that I’ve encountered.

TGM: Alright, there’s perks to being a DJ..spill it. What are they? Continue Story »

Posted By: nathanpinard on Jul 24, 12:23 am

Although this isn’t total news and is quite late, Spectrasonics; one of the leading sample and virtual instrument developers has released a podcast presenting their new software synth entitled “Omnisphere” to be released later in 2008. The video series doesn’t just demonstrate the amazing abilities of this new software synth, but also goes into the how and why they decided to approach a project such as this, right down to demonstrating some of the vintage synths of our time.

Omnisphere is known since NAMM as being a next generation synthesizer module. It combines real recordings of instruments, as well as created custom instruments, and even more odd situations right down to setting a piano on fire, and playing it while recording it. In the video podcast for Omnisphere, you can see the various techniques they used, as well as the features implemented in Omnisphere.

Omnisphere is planned to be released September 15, 2008 for Windows XP/Vista and Macintosh with Audio Unit, VST, and RTAS support for compatibility with all major host software.

To watch the video series you can go here, or check out the teaser site here.

The series is also available on iTunes.

Nathan Allen Pinard: I’m pretty exited about this library, as it helps with a lot of things for me in terms of electronic music. It should be fun coming up with the various techniques using the arpeggiator, as well as the patches themselves. Just about any musician that is a pro would want this in their library.

Meet the Geek: Nathan Allen Pinard
Posted By: Candace on Jul 15, 7:40 pm

The “Meet the Geek” series is going strong. Introducing you all to the Affiliates and people who create all the media here at The Geek Media. Now, it’s time to meet Nathan Allen Pinard.

TGM: Alright, you know the drill. Your name and what it is you do.
Nathan: My name is Nathan Allen Pinard. I am a profession composer for all types of media from machinima, short films, independent albums, and games. I’m also the Sound Lead for the independent gaming company “Burning Man Studios”

TGM:Nathan, your biggest deal is a composer. Tell us a bit of background of what you’ve done with composing.
Nathan:I’d say it goes all the way back to when I was a kid. My parents noticed things about me in terms of creativity. Even down to when I was a baby tapping my foot perfectly with whatever music that was playing. Often times I always had a keyboard, and created small pieces of music. But it was never anything special. It only happened around my high school years, where the school budget was so low they cut the entire concert band class. However, for some reason the teachers were still hired and working in various other classes. So there was an empty band room sitting there a certain time everyday. So the teachers got the idea to create a composition class, which also ended up being a band as well, which served in various school events. We started by lifting tunes that we thought were great, mainly during the 70’s and 80’s. After learning how to transcribe music onto paper from a tape, we then started to write out own. This band ended up playing songs such as Stevie Wonders “Superstition” at football and basketball games, rather than  your general pep band. We were pretty popular during that time.
