The free-to-play, mmorpg DOFUS Online has reached a milestone not many online games reach - it now has over 10 million players worldwide. Of the 10 million, ANKAMA claims over 1.5 million subscribe so they can have full access to all of the Flash game’s regions and features. Not bad, considering this feat was accomplished in only four years, DOFUS was originally released in September, 2004.
Since ANKAMA is a French company, and DOFUS started in France, roughly 70% of the players hail from that region. However, the other 30% are players from the US, Canada and other countries in Europe. The game is available in 10 languages and open to people from 150 different countries.
DOFUS is a very accessible mmorpg. It runs on Mac, PC and Linux systems, doesn’t have any major graphics requirements and can even be played over a dial-up internet connection. The Windows version 1.25 is only a 2.4mb download, but the Mac and Linux version is a bit chunkier at 160mb. If you want to sample, its really easy to do so. The only downside is, most of the story quests and extra features are only available to subscribers.
