Blizzcon Day 2 Update: Starcraft 2 Extortion
This is an opinion, first and foremost. This is the opinion of the CEO of The Geek Media, but it’s still just an opinion, so please take this with a grain of salt. I’m not happy.
To start off with, announcements out of Blizzcon this year have been sub-par, as you hopefully have been reading, which really shows that Blizzcon is just a smalltime games convention, nothing more, and that all this press coverage really isn’t deserved by it.
One piece of news that we just recieved late yesterday was that Starcraft 2 would be released in three different installments. I admit originally I didn’t think this news was even worth posting about, they must have a good reason for it, and people will buy it, no biggie. I ended up reading into it thanks to Strixus, and needless to say, I’m not happy.
How this is going to work: People will need to buy each of the games, some have rumored a cost of each game being the cost of a normal game, which could put the cost of the whole package into the triple digits, which needless to say is disgusting if it’s true. I hope to whatever gods there are in the universe it’s not.
Whether or not we have the insane cost for the game-in-total, the problem still stands that you have to buy three games instead of one for one reason: They’re making the campaigns have querky little minigame mechanics that are unique to each race. This has to be one of the worst ideas I’ve ever heard from both a business perspective and a gamer’s perspective. First off, the querky mechanics should be with the race and the way they operate, not a stupid little minigame you play through and then forget about once you get to the multiplayer. Secondly, they’re asking us to buy three games when we originally had to buy one, which I feel is asking too much of their fanbase.
Although we have yet to see exactly what comes with each game, it’s this writers opinion that it’s not worth it. I would implore everyone reading this to look up the information for themselves, the articles that I was pointed at for this were the kotaku articles on the topic, the orignal one being here, and the follow up from Blizzard trying to douse the flames being here.
Once again, this is an opinion of the CEO of TGM, this is not fact nor an opinion of TGM itself, and if you disagree with this or feel this shouldn’t be posted, feel free to email me at letoatreidesofcaladan@gmail.com

Greed. Years of having a virtual captive audience for WoW have made Blizzard thick minded. This is the same company that screws up the principle aspects of a story for its most popular game. This is the same company that regularly totally changes the base mechanics of classes.
I lay odds they screw up the lore in SC2. I have no faith in them any longer.
