Sony has released the 5.0 firmware update to the PlayStation Portable.  Some of the new features include…

  • MPEG-4 H.264 Video Codec Support at up to 640×480 resolution (roughly the same as the iPod High Quality video settings)
  • Backlight Auto-Adjust
  • Sleep timer with the ability to use a song as an alarm
  • New default theme design for the Cross Media Bar (XMB)
  • Full Sized QUERTY Keyboard
The biggest part of the update is the ability to access the PlayStation Store without the need of a PS3.  Games and other content can be downloaded directly from the store over a WiFi network onto the PSP’s internal memory card.
