CryTEK Takes Unnecessary Steps Forward
Coming from darkzero.co.uk, it’s been announced that CryTEK will be introducing a brand new game development engine at the Game Developers Conference Expo this year. It’s slated to be the greatest and most advanced Developer’s Platform ever put together in one singular program. Make what judgements on this you will, but I think this is wasted time and money in this day and age.
As it stands, the current graphics coming out of the CryTEK DPs are already over the top of what the everyday system can handle. It stands that Crysis still won’t run on my system on it’s lowest settings, and I can currently play World of Warcraft on it’s highest settings without any hiccups or issues. With that kind of benchmark, I really scratch my head and ask myself what CryTEK wants to do by advancing their platform, graphics, and tools even more. I understand they’re out to sell copies of their software and prove they’re the premium game developer that they feel they are, but seriously? More powerful graphics? Do they want no one to be able to play their games? This is silly in my opinion, you have to let the general public catch up with what you’re putting out.
This has been a random opinion from your neighborly CEO, Leto.

You fail to take into account that a development platform is what you make of it. You could quite easily make a game that runs on your system fine within the Crytek engine, just don’t use all of it’s elaborate features.
Secondly, I doubt it’s just for PC development, which, as you prove in your own article, is limited to people who can run WoW at it’s highest settings and are fine leaving their system at that. You could easily develop for the PS3 or 360 in their system, I’d imagine.
Finally, there is no point at which engine developers will go “Oh, pish posh, graphics are fine where they are, there’s no room for improvement, we will discontinue any further technological advancements in this field”.
That being said, I agree that it is currently graphic over kill, your game should not look better than it plays, or it wont sell very well…take the games on the crytek engine for example
The biggest problem with engines coming out today is they are focusing ENTIRELY on graphics, and no so much gameplay. Graphics are the biggest resource sucking department in game development, and takes the most time. As a result, the gameplay in most of the FPS’s we see today is either not there at all, or there in the beginning but redundant later.
Good example would be Mass Effect, in which it uses the UE3 engine. Mass Effect seems immersive and wonderful in the beginning, however later on, I’m searching planet after planet and running through the same complex over and over again. I’m sure Bioware wanted to do better, but graphics are so wanted nowadays, the devs are forced to prioritize then (except for a few indie devs that go against that rule)
