MPAA Gets Real, Real Gets MPAA

Real Networks has been taken to court over their RealDVD software over violations to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).  That, however, was far too straight forward and Real Networks has filed a lawsuit in Northern California asking for the court to rule that RealDVD complies with the DVD Copy Control Association’s license agreement.

RealDVD is a software product that copies a DVD movie to the end user’s PC, ripping the standard encryption found on commercial DVDs and replaces it with Real’s own encryption code.  From one point of view one could say that the “movie” is still copy protected.  However, the MPAA argues that “RealDVD software illegally circumvents this copyright protection system”.

Real Networks is hoping that it’s software will be ruled legitimate and legal after a similar ruling was found for a software package created by Kaleidescape.  Kaleidescape’s software, much like RealDVD, allowed the end user to store secure copies of DVDs and CDs for easy playback over PC.
